Wandel & Golterman SZU969 / SZU 969 Speech Attachment & 2-Wire Switch Over

When end-to end measurements are implemented on AF transmission equipment, an intercommunications connection between the craftspersonnel stationed at each end is a necessary prerequisite for any effective measurement. Frequently this type of circuit is available only via the test circuit itself while measurements are being made.

This problem is solved by the SZU-969 Speech Attachment and 2-Wire Switch over in conjunction with an AF Measuring Setup and Digital Level Meters PMP-20/ PM-20, A.F. Sweep Measuring Setup AWIM-20 or Data Circuit Test Sets DLM 3/4 or DLM-20.

The SZU 969 is used on either 4 wire lines or 2 wire lines and on D.C current holding exchange loops.

The connector-adaptors permit the SZU 969 to be inserted between the measuring equipment and the measuring leads. These adaptors contain switching devices that allow the connection and disconnection of the measuring leads from the measuring equipment. By this means the SZU 969 can be operated as a Speech/Monitor device or, via the 2 wire switch over, the generator or the receiver can be selected for connection to the test leads. As a result, operation on 2 wire lines does not reqire replugging when modes are changed over.

Characteristics:

The Speech Atttachment can be operated, as selected either as a telephone handset or deskjet. Loudspeaker and microphone are integral to the SZU969. Volume is adjustable.

When the Speech Attachment is switched ON and the function selector switch is placed at SPEECH, normal intercommunications with the opposite site are possible. In position "MONNITOR Without Test Tone Suppression" the loudspeaker serves for aural assessment of the received test voltage And not only the send signal from the opposite end can be monitored, but also other typical signals like random circuit noise, signalling noise etc. can be listened to. In Switch position "MONITOR with Test Tone Suppression" the test tone is suppressed because it is disturbing to the operator. A speech detection circuit switches in the loudspeaker immediately when the receive signal has the characteristics of a speech signal, so that the user can always be contacted.

If the SZU969 is switched to deskset telephone mode, then any incoming signalling tone produces a call tone in the loud speaker: switching ON the SPEECH ATTACHMENT coressponds to lifting the receiver at a telephone set. The keypad is used for dialing up a subscriber, if operating through a d.c exchange loops.

With the 2-Wire Selector switched ON, the A and B pairs jacks on the SZU969 and the connector adaptors are connected in parallel. Then the function selector switch permits the 2-wire switch over to be controlled in a way that either the Generator or the Receiver, or both, are simultaneously connected to the 2-wire line plugged into jacks A or B.

When the SZU 969 is operated on a 4-wire line, the 2-wire selector remains switched OFF. If the battery is in a discharged condition, the SZU969 automatically assumes this operating state.

This small hand sized instrument can be operated either with dry batteries or rechargeable NiCads.

A flashing green LED shows that the SZU969 is ready for operating. When the colour of the LED changes to red this means that the batteries are almost flat. The SZU969 can be driven from the a.c. line via the a.c adaptor/charger if the rechargeable batteries are in place.
